Those several weeks are/is a period when....
I wrote the sentence below, and got corrected on the discrepancy between "weeks" and "period" - I used "...several weeks ARE a period when...", and my interlocutor thinks it should be "...several weeks IS a period when...".
Can someone please advise which is correct?
Here's the whole sentence:
"As in all jobs, the first several weeks are a period when you don't really understand anything, but it's also a time when you can demonstrate your adaptability, work ethic, team spirit and interpersonal skills."

Anonymousmy interlocutor thinks it should be "...several weeks IS a period when...".I agree, especially since, as GPY points out, you've referred to the several weeks as "it" later.
