Thoroughly clean

Can I say,

(a) Wash the jam jar thoroughly clean.

(b) Wash the jam jar until it is thoroughly clean.

You may say these, but they seem a little redundant. I guess (b) is okay, since you really want to stress how clean it must be. But for (a), "Wash the jam jar thoroughly," and "Clean the jam jar thoroughly" seem sufficient.

(I suppose my last version doesn't necessarily imply washing.)
