Thistles?

What is the name of the green prickly things that grow on some trees? They look like cherries but they are covered in little spikes. When they fall on the ground they turn brown. I don't think they are called thistles.

Interesting. In Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the second half of the '70s schoolkids called those or something similar gumballs. I wonder if that derives from the "sweet gum" designation.
