This/That

Hello all!

The book I am reading right now explains the difference between this-that in this way;

This can be back-pointing, forward-pointing and outward-pointing. However that can not be forward-pointing(The book does not say this, but I have understood as if it can not). So here is my question;

I was talking along the street when this girl came up to me..( = 'a girl I'm going to tell you about which means forward-pointing). According to the book(again this is what I have understood. Book does not say it actually), I can not replace this with that, in this point.

1-) Do I know it right? That can not be forward-pointing?

2-) Is not it quite weird not to allowed to use that instead of this? In my opinion both are OK.

Also I'd like to add those in this. I mean, since those is the plural form of that, same rule must be applied, right? However for example we say, those who don't in believe me will be regret when I win this tournament.( Those is forward-pointing here, is not it?)

Thank you.

  • Frankly, I really don't like " back-pointing, forward-pointing and outward-pointing" as a way of trying to understand 'this' and 'that' at all.
  • Simply learn the three uses of 'this' that contrast with 'that' and you're home.

Hello terry. Thank you for your reply. So let me ask you these;

This is what I thought.
That is what I thought.

Is there a chance of these sentences being different from each other? I know you do not like "back-pointing, forward-pointing and outward-pointing)

This is what I thought.( Either you explained this before or are going to explain this)

This is what I feared.
You are confusing the use of 'this' as a pronoun, and 'this' as an adjective.

In your sentences above, you are using 'this/that' as pronouns:
'this' used to introduce someone or something:

This is what I thought: let's forget about XYZ and concentrate on finishing ABC. What do you think?

Thank you again. However I really don't understand this;

They're pronouns, I get this. But what I don't understand is can't this/that be back-pointing pronouns?

We're trying to discuss this when I do not know what you are referring to with your 'that is what I thought' sentence.

Here's my example of context:
Barrister for the prosecution: Did you tell Mr. Brown that you thought the project would not be completed on time?
Me: Yes. Bas
