This weekend vs next weekend

If a person says I'll see you next weekend, does that mean the weekend immediately coming up, or, the weekend after that? We are having quite a debate and need someone to settle it for us!

You won't find agreement - which is why you're having this debate. If you said it Thursday or Friday, I would feel certain you meant the week following, but if you said it Monday through Wednesday, it's anyone's guess.
