this way or in this way

Hi,

I sometimes get very confused about the use of 'this way' or 'in this way'. How can I make the right choice?

How about doing it this way?

I don't think that "in" is needed. I am a native speaker and don't know if I have ever heard people say "How about doing it in this way."

I would just use, "How about doing it this way."
