This tuesday, next tuesday

its us again. Today, Monday 13 oct, my newly wed wife asked me to set up an appointment with our solicitor
i sent her a text sms saying that "i booked the appointment for next tuesday"
.She interpreted next tuesday as being tomorrow, tuesday. she made arrangements to take the day off at her work tomorrow.

when we met later in the day she found out i set the date for tuesday 21st oct.
i told her if i ment tomorrow i would have said "this tuesday" not next tuesday.
Could you please explain when in english should you use "this tuesday" and "next tuesday" ?
thanks,
Will
PS the mtg with solicitor was not about divorce Emotion: wink

You were right. Your wife is an idiot. Or foreign. Or both. Bad luck.

"This Tuesday" is OK, but "next Tuesday", as you have discovered, is ambiguous, especially if the coming Tuesday is four or more days away. I was burned that way once, so I never use "next". Now that you have had the experience, you shouldn't either.
