This topic is about "it"

Some times I see the word "it" being used in places that I wouldn't put it, like: what day is it today ?- normally I would say: what day is today? what is it with you? - what is with you? and so on.Therefore, two question: when do I have to use it? Could I remove 'it" from the sentences that I gave as an example?
