What do you use to refer back and forth? For example:

1. This / That is the message she sent to me. OR This / That is what she said.

(the message)

2. (the message)

This / That is the message she sent to me. OR This / That is what she said.

Which one would you use?

PS: 1. Does the same thing true of these / those?

2. Would you use it or they this way?

2. As far as I know, you can use either but some (many?) people argue

Yes, it's the same for these and those.
No, I would not use it that way.
