This sentences are semantically good, aren't they? If not, how can I make them good?

Much to his surprise, he suddenly found himself lying in bed. He was glad that he had escaped such a nightmare.

Yes. But do you mean 'grammatically'? Semantics has to do with meaning.

Instead of saying He was glad that he had escaped such a nightmare, can I say He was thankful for having escaped such a nightmare or He was glad that he got through such a nightmare or He was glad that he woke up from such a nightmare?

Can I include had before ...he got through such a nightmare and before ...he had waken up from such a nightmare?
