This sentence contains redundant expressions, doesn't it?

Somebody wrote such a message. It contains redundant expressions, doesn't it? They’re looking for their own hero, one who can protect them in times of danger, when they can actually be their own heroes.

I just wonder: Why did she have to say ...hero, one who can protect them in times of danger, when there has already been a connotation that a hero does protect someone else from danger?

Another thing: I can't understand what she means by they can actually be their own heroes. (Could it be an English idiom?)

Mister MicawberNo, there is no idiom. I can be my own doctor if I prescribe medicine for myself or I can be my own barber if I cut my hair myself.
Wow! What a very nice explanation, Mister Micawber!
