I think it could be any situation which any normal average human could relate to.
Now he had been away from his wife and children for more than a year and there had never been a single moment when he didn't miss them. But it was for them. This painful separation. So that his children could have better future. For his children and wife he was ready to go through hell...
I think the above text would evoke sympathy and respect (at least, this is what I think) for the character.
