This or that?

Hi teachers. Is the underscored part OK? And should it be this or that?

Dan: How are you and Liza?

Brad: Fine. And you and Jess?

Dan: Fine.

They share a smile, no need for this/that. Brad grabs the TV-remote and turns on the TV.

Brad: Let's watch some football.

It is hard to understand and is apparently a comma splice error. Is it supposed to mean that they are smiling while thinking "There is no need for this/that", i.e. no need to talk about relationships?
