this or that

this might be a really common question but i never have seem to have gotten a correct answer, the question being that is the usage of both 'this' and 'that' in the same tense correct or can we only use one in another. for eg:"this pencil is amazing to use"&"that pencil is amazing to use",with both the sentences refering to the same objector can we only use 'that' in the past tense such as that pencil was amazing
