This or that ?

Hello,
I have a question. What is the diffrent between "this"and "that'' ? I think we use "this" for example "This is Jane" (you see Jane front of you, you know she is there) and we use "that" for something in the past, Am I right?

This refers to the item near you. That refers to the item farther away. I have just finished this book.

"This" is someone or something close to you, next to you, near to you. "That" is something or someone farther away. This apple is better than that apple.
