This month/today/this year

I only did it once this year. / I've only done it once this year.
I only did it once today. / I've only done it once today.
I only did it once this month. / I've only done it once this month.

How do I choose between present perfect and simple past when a time period hasn't finished as with 'this year', 'today', 'this month' etc? Which tense should I use? Thanks.

You're looking for an external reason to choose between these tenses when, often, it's an internal reason. It just depends on how you feel. We can't say "Use this one", "Use that one", just by looking at the sentences.
