This is why or because?

One of the most difficult things I have seen in the text is as follows.

But it can also happen that one’s memories grow sharper after a long lapse of time. This is [why / because] one is looking at the past with fresh eyes and can isolate and, as it were, notice facts which previously existed undifferentiated among a mass of others.

According to a text, “because” is the correct answer. Could you tell me the reason why?

Consider these simpler examples..
I am wet. This is because it is raining. 'Because' introduces a reason.
It is raining. This is why I am wet. Here, 'why' introduces a result.
