This is the way that I learn English

Hi teachers.

I have a couple of questions regarding the relative adverb "how"

Please look over the sentences below.

1. This is the way how I learn English. (×)

2. This is the way I English. (0)

3. This is how I learn English. (0).

I don't know why but I have learned that 'how' and 'the way' cannot be used together - I will appreciate if you can tell me why though.

4. This is the way in which I learned English. (0)

5. This is the way which I learn English in. (?)

6. This is the way that I English.(?)

7. This is the way that I take. (0)

8. This is the way how I take (?)

Many thanks in advance teachers.

You guys have been better advisors to me than any other grammar book. ??

Michelle Cha I don't know why but I have learned that 'how' and 'the way' cannot be used together - I will appreciate if you can tell me why though. That's true. We have 'person who', 'thing that', 'time when', and 'place where', but not 'way how'.

  • That's true.
  • We have 'person who', 'thing that', 'time when', and 'place where', but not 'way how'.
  • It's just a combination that's missing from English.
  • There is no logical reason for it.
