This is the house he was born in. --- About Definite Articles

I'd be happy if someone would answer my question. Thanks in advance.

Concerning the sentence: This is the house he was born in, I want to know whether my idea about Definite Article is right or not.

I think there are 3 possible explanations for the usage of "the" in the above sentence.

The first is that "the house" is already mentioned, so "the" is used. (In this case, the above sentence is the same as "This is the house."

The second is that there is only one particular house where he was born, so "the" is used.

The third is that "the house" is none other than "the house" instead of this house or that house.

Is my explanation, especially the third, correct?

>The second is that there is only one particular house where he was born, so "the" is used. This is it. The 3rd is only a variation on it, with stress on THE.

  • >The second is that there is only one particular house where he was born, so "the" is used.
  • This is it.
  • The 3rd is only a variation on it, with stress on THE.
