"this is significant of that"

Hello,

I was wondering if you can say "something is significant of something else" i.e. some evidence is significant some process. e.g. smoke is significant of a fire.

you can say "smoke signifies a fire" but I don't know if the above is ok.

Thanks

Niall

no longer hung upon its hinges, but was propped against the lintel, was significant of decay. It may be possible, but it is certainly not popular.

I found only one example in the Corpus of Contemporary American English:

....no longer hung upon its hinges, but was propped against the lintel, was significant of decay.

It may be possible, but it is certainly not popular.
