Topic: More and more people want to buy clothes, cars and other items with famous brands. What are the reasons? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

My essay:

In recent times, it has become far more normal for people who have expenditure on high-end products. This is mainly because of the high quality of famous goods and they want to show off their richness. From my point of view, I would consider this trend has some more detrimental aspects than positive features.

To begin with, there are various reasons for people to spend money on buying luxury products from famous brands. First, well-known brands are quality assurance. Obviously, throughout a long history of development, these brands know exactly what people need at their products; therefore, several products are improved about models as well as quality in order to satisfy their customers. For example, by having insight into the necessity of communication when people stay far from their family, Apple has been created software called “ FaceTime”, which enables users to see each other in high definition. Secondly, another reason people prefer purchasing high-end goods is that they want to show off their richness. In terms of psychology, people always desire the acceptance of others; therefore, it would demonstrate their superior success if they can afford luxury products of famous companies.

Overall, this trend brings more drawbacks than benefits to society. On the one hand, the main benefit that is customers have opportunities to experience a sumptuous life. Furthermore, these people, as a result, are less likely to worry about the chance of buying a low-quality item. On the other hand, the first negative effect is companies that own famous brands may become monopolistic, which means in the long term they may lose motivation to striving for better products and services if these brands are not compulsory to compete to win customers’ hearts. The second side effect that should be considered is people could squander their money on superfluous items. Sometimes, they want to reward themselves for their hard work from supporting themselves to something they typically can not afford; however, it would make they are not able to control their finance. As a result, it is likely to lead they have to struggle to maintain a sustainable life.

To sum up, I do strongly believe that famous brand's products selling well demonstrate the progress of society. However, every consumer should according to their practical situations to choose goods, following the trend blindly is inadvisable.
