Topic: Research suggests that the majority of criminals who are sent to prison commit crimes when set free. What are the reasons? What can be done to solve the problem?

My essay:

There is an increase in the number of people who re-offend after they have been punished. While there are several reasons for this alarming trend, some effective measures can be taken by governments to tackle this problem.

To begin with, the first reason for criminals commit illegal activities again is that they often have no other way of making a living. Obviously, many employers avoid hiring a person who has a criminal offender stigma. Furthermore, by being sentenced for a long time in prison, offenders may lose work skills and are given little opportunity to gain useful work experience; therefore, they often experience many difficulties in finding suitable jobs for their abilities. Secondly, repeat offending is also owing to offenders mix with other criminals who can be a negative influence. In other words, these inmates would foster other criminals keep committing illegal actions in order to fight against the state.

There are various solutions for governments to prevent recidivism. Firstly, unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of prison programmers. This way is not only a massive chance for criminals to learn practical skills such as computer programming, car maintenance, and graphic design but it also would eliminate the detrimental influence that prisons can have. Secondly, governments should make offenders useful in their local communities. For example, the state could require them to talk to school groups or clean public areas. Subsequently, local residents may have a better viewpoint towards criminals who are released and give them a hand to integrate back into society.

In conclusion, it is true the recidivism is one of the problems for the community but it can be solved by requiring offenders to take part in vocational actions and altering attitudes of people about criminals who leave prison.
