Some universities offer online courses as an alternative to classes delivered on campus. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

My essay:

Distance education is provided for students in order to replace traditional classes at many universities. Although this development has some detrimental aspects, I believe that positive effects outweigh the disadvantages.

To begin with, the main drawback of the trend towards online university courses is that there is less direct interaction. With the blooming of technology, students can communicate with their friends or teachers easily via computer or phone, which means they do not have many opportunities face-to-face with their tutors or peers. Therefore, students could not display emotional expressions as vividly as the way they communicate directly. For example, while in traditional classes people can meet at lecture halls in order to express their ideas thoroughly, online learners are restricted from chatting through website forums. As a result, there are some misunderstandings can happen between them, which can make their relationship become worse.

On the other hand, despite the negatives mentioned above, I believe that online university courses are a positive development for various reasons. First, it helps people study in a flexible way. A typical example of this is the poor, who may just have square time in the evening to study, so online courses allow them to broaden their knowdeges whenever and wherever. Second, distance learning also contributes to reduce air pollution. According to some reports that gas exhaust is one of the major factors that increase the temperature of the earth, which means it could be reduced if public transports or motorbikes are not used more for traveling to universities. Furthermore, lower costs and the widespread presence of the Internet allow unlimited numbers of participants regardless of not only their financial background but also current living places. For example, Coursera is a website that offers a variety of courses at reasonable prices and presents legal degrees for participants upon completion of each course.

In conclusion, while I recognize the possible disadvantages of online learning, I consider it to be a positive development overall.
