COMPARE AND CONTRAST ESSAY

Ana and Doña Carmen

The movie “Real Women Have Curves”, written by Josefina Lopez and George La Voo,

shows the relationship between Ana, a 18 year-old Mexican-American teenager , and her old-

traditional Mexican mother. In the movie, Ana and Carmen emerge as contrasting

personalities. Carmen, the mother, is dramatic with strong morals and her daughter Ana is

open minded and confidant.

Like most children of immigrants growing up in United States, Ana clashes with her

traditional mother when it comes to discussions about going to college. Ana is a smart

student and receives a full scholarship to Columbia University, New York after graduating

from Beverly Hills High School. Ana thinks that it is a good opportunity to better her and get

a higher education. In contrast, Carmen is against Ana continuing her education. She feels

that is time for Ana to work and help out(Is it right?) the family. She wants teach Ana the

skills of a traditional housewife—cleaning, cooking, raising children and taking care of her

husband.

College is not only thing that Ana and Carmen argue about, self-esteem is other.(Is it

a complete sentences?) Ana’s self esteem is strong, but she is put down by her mother.

As a result of this( or Despite of) Ana is insecure about her physical appearance; however,

she overcomes her insecurity accepting herself as a person. She thinks that a woman should

be judged(Is it ok?) by her thoughts and by her ideas, not by her physical. Even though

Carmen is in a poor condition, (Can I use a comma here?) she is always making Ana feel

bad about her overweight with comments like, “If you lost weight, you could be beautiful.”

She believes that a woman’s main purpose in life is attracting a husband and having children.

Carmen tries to enforce old traditions on Ana. Ana deals with the situation of living

home and old life [DON'T UNDERSTAND](I mean Ana left home for her dream of going to

college). On other hand, Carmen insists that her family cannot be apart from each other

(Does it sounds right?). Ana falls into the transitions to becoming an independent and mature

woman [DON'T UNDERSTAND]( I mean that Ana falls into the transition of becoming

independent).( I don’t know how to explain it). Ana does not believe that she must abstain

from sex until she is married, unlike her mother who believes that she must. Carmen thinks

that it goes against her moral (principals or principles?). [PARAGRAPH IS AWKWARD] Why? I

don’t understand

In the movie “Real Woman Have Curves”, Ana struggled with her role of being a Latina in

United States and her dreamD(Is this past tense?) of doing things by her.[???](I think is

herself) I think women should be accepted for who they are, instead of their body shape.

Thank you,
Pilita
