Today, with the topic "Social problems of the Philippines", we will discuss the following three issues:
1. Water problems
2. The problem of the rich-poor hierarchy
3. The issue of gender equality
Post body:
1. Clean water crisis
The first is the problem of water resources. As everyone knows the problem of clean water is always an urgent problem for every human being. We need clean water for bathing, washing, and cooking. But the sad thing is, that the tap water in the Philippines cannot be drunk directly.
*The cause is:
-Due to the speed of urbanization. Untreated residential waste flows directly into the watercourse.
- Due to climate change. Rainfall decreases while demand increases.
-High demand but outdated infrastructure, water drainage, and filtration systems are not up to standard
The situation of “clean water crisis” in the Philippines is so serious that:
-Since 2019, the problem of clean water in many areas in the Philippines has become urgent. On many days, the tap water was cut off for up to 20 hours.
- The Marilao River that flows through Metro Manila in the Philippines has a high level of pollution. According to official statistics, only 20-30% of city households are connected to the sewer system. The remaining 70% of households have septic tanks, which means there are many cases of waste leakage into the aquifer.
*So is there any solution for this situation?
- The Manila government has constantly called for the protection of water sources and periodically carried out garbage collection in the rivers.
- Raise public awareness of environmental protection through propaganda and education campaigns.
=>Thanks to those temporary solutions, the Philippines is gradually overcoming this problem so that people can have a better life.
2. Class differentiation
Next comes the issue of the gap between rich and poor. The Philippines is a developing country. In terms of economy, education, and culture all developed. At the same time, the gap between rich and poor has also widened.
-One of the places with many slums, home to a large number of poor workers in the city of Pasay, where the Ninoy Aquino International Airport is located. According to the 2011 census, there were 34,450 unregistered immigrant families in the city of Pasay, creating a community of poor people living in huge slums. People here mostly work as street vendors, workers at construction sites, or ride tricycles, or jeepneys.
However, not far away is Makati a place that represents the development of the Philippines.
Makati is the financial and economic center of both Metro Manila - in particular - as well as the whole Philippines - in general. Urban planning in Makati is very clear and modern. Pedestrians have their path on the sidewalk and cross the street using an underpass or an overhead flyover. Streets are always clean, no litter indiscriminately.
-The above contrast has shown us a clear disparity between the rich and the poor in the Philippines.
-In the slums, the high population density, poor infrastructure, and poor living conditions lead to many bad consequences, especially environmental pollution, food safety, and hygiene issues. disease. Poor children do not have enough conditions to go to school, leading to a high illiteracy rate. While in the rich area, the opposite is true.
*So is there a way to shorten that distance? The comments you have anything?
- I think the government should have policies to support people out of poverty, with interest-free loans, or planning to resettle in slums so that people can settle down and work.
- As for me, I think that to reduce the gap, political stability is extremely important, creating a good business and investment environment, open democracy for all people to have the opportunity to rise, and creating favorable conditions for people to thrive. Democracy is also an example of disparity reduction.
- Correct, the Philippine government is trying its best to solve this problem but I think this will be a long battle.
3. Gender equality.
Finally, there is the issue of gender equality. None of us are born with the right to choose our gender. But the older we get, the more we discover who we are and what we need.
I am glad that Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines have respected and accepted the LGBT community as a third gender besides men and women.
The LGBT community in the Philippines is respected and accepted as the result of a whole process of struggle, reform, and education. I think it's equality!
-In the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Gender Gap Index 2018, the Philippines scored the highest among Asian nations, and came in at 8th place in the global rankings, up 2 places. compared to 2017 rankings. The country shows an improvement in economic factors, with wage equality and women's income increasing.
According to the World Bank (WB), 30% of the seats in the Philippine Congress were held by women in 2017, the country also had two female presidents.
That's a great thing, the Philippine government and President Rodrigo Duterte, who have worked so hard to get the Philippines to have such results, are truly commendable.
End:
-These are all big problems that the Philippines is gradually overcoming
-I think it would be good if these issues are resolved soon so that the Philippines becomes a developed country and that the people here live happier.
- we ask for all. Thank you everyone for listening.
