Letter Writing

This is my motivation letter for a PhD program, I request any warm comments and feedbacks to improve the letter.

I am writing to apply for the PhD in molecular sciences in … advertised on your department website….I am a post graduate in biotechnology and biomedical sciences with an excellent academic history and research skills developed through various projects, symposiums and workshops.
I realised my unrelenting passion for developing the career in life sciences during the higher secondary education in biological sciences in 2002 when I was selected as a part of national young scientists, working on the project effect of extract of Ocimum Tenuflorum (Tulsi or Tulasi) on Staphylococcus aureus and understanding the rate of S.aureus inhibition by the extracts. After successfully completing higher secondary with 92% of marks (24th rank out of more than eighty thousand students writing the exams), I went on pursuing bachelor’s in Biotechnology and Botany in the University of Kerala, India in the year 2004 and master’s degree in Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences in the year 2010 with 86% marks (top 4th in the University) and 78% (highest first class) (3rd rank) respectively. Thorough out the 6 years (2004-2010), my active participation scientific activities abetted me developing my research and transferrable skills. In 2006, I had the privilege to work in a nationally funded (National Science Projects, India) project titled ‘the effect of ‘Bisphenol A’ on the protein functional and structural changes in Anabas testudineus’, combining molecular biology, biophysics and biochemistry techniques (more details of the project is in the CV) . I received special scientific award of Luis Pasteur’s Science Academy in 2006 for the paper presentation “SSIRs in the treatment of irreversible dementia”. Research associated job experiences such as working as graduate assistant trainee in the Kerala University (2006-2007) research assistant in Bharathiyar University (2007-2009) (detailed in the CV) boosted my passion for pursuing a PhD.
One of the most privileges moment in my life was when I received UGC’s best young scientist award in the year 2007 for my services, accomplishments and passion for my science. Working in National Centre for Biological Sciences, India as a post graduate summer intern for the project “The effect of Curcumin in Paclitaxel-Induced Nuclear Factor-?B Pathway in Breast Cancer Cells and Lung Metastasis of Human Breast Cancer’ and the subsequent dissertation project work in molecular genetics and transformation in Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), India in the title “Standardization of Gene transfer by Agrobacterium tumefaciens in Monocots (Zingiber officinale)” (international project with collaboration of Caltech University, USA), gave me abundant boost up to my research and transferrable skills. The experience of working in the international research diploma project in environmental management in United Kingdom (Sustainable Development) in the year 2010, has significantly improved my communicational, research and writing skills to an international level. The network of professionals, scientists, and developers that I could build by working as environmental researcher and developer for 2 most reputed organisations working under the Environmental Agency’s developmental agenda (details in CV), has also helped me developing as a person of realistic ambitions and potentials to succeed.

I have had academic and research experience in various sectors of biosciences (mentioned in CV), which makes it difficult for me in choosing desired topic. Nevertheless I have developed very strong research and an experimental skill set that makes me a strong candidate to retrofit to any projects in life sciences. Above all abilities to adapt and work efficiently in new and busy environment can be highlighted as a significant quality that makes me a strong candidate for this project. High levels of transferrable skills gained from national and international projects and seminars add gold feathers to my application.
I am very passionate in applying for PhD in life sciences in International Max Planck Research School as the University has an outstanding research, training and development background. The university’s reputation in supporting the international talents with excellent teaching and research support make me feel that I am applying to the ideal organisation to pursue my dream. With my strong academic and research skills, I can promise that I can bring the highest quality of research and support embedded with very strong skill set.
I request you to find a copy of the CV associated with this letter and come back to me with a reply. You won’t be surprised to find me as an ideal candidate for this post if you can give sometime on the application. Please don’t hesitate to contact me on.….Emotion: email.

I am looking forward to receiving your reply
