Essay & Composition Writing

This is my essay please review it

Society is based on rules and laws. It could not function if individuals were free to do whatever they wanted to do. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Some people think the presence of laws and rules contributes to the prosperity of society. Without them, people’s benefits and safety cannot be ensured. And this is an apparently harrowing situation. I agree with this opinion but have some reservations.

First, rules and laws are created to make society safer. For example, if people can pass traffic lights without being fined, then it may cause more traffic accidents. Another example is that in hospitals people are compelled to refrain from smoking because it will adversely affect patients especially those with lung diseases. Therefore, legislation and rules are unquestionably necessary for society in terms of safety.

Second, rules and laws help to keep society developing. To illustrate this, suppose people can commit tax evasion without being punished, then governments may lack budgets. Therefore, there would be not enough investment in several pivotal sectors such as education. As a result, this will lead to a less educated and productive workforce, thus, curbing economic growth.

However, if rules and laws become too cruel, then it will trigger unhappiness and resentfulness in society. In North Korea, for instance, here people are not allowed to express their thoughts about their government, otherwise, they would face serious consequences. In fact, excessively controlling people’s thinking and acting by means of laws is what this country has long been doing, which explains why many North Korean people try to cross borders into other countries every year.

In conclusion, although legislation and rules are important to protect people and to keep society developing, they must be reasonable and justifiable. This is because each individual should have some extent of freedom to lead a happy and fulfilling life.
