Topic: The effect of poverty on children's development.
The article of LIVESTRONG by Jill Richards on June 13,2017 revealed that poverty creates long-term disadvantages for children, putting them behind their peers who do not struggle with privation. However, there are actually many people who turn out to achieve high success have come from poverty. The question here is that whether poor environment has totally negative effect on the young generation.
To begin with, growing up in poverty may place those children at a disadvantage, in view of low levels of educational attainment and pessimistic attitudes. According to Katherine Magnuson and Elizabeth Volt, “poor children are one third less likely to complete high school than those children not living in poor areas.” This reality may be due to the problems of those families’ finance or the lack of parental involvement in providing an academic background for their children. Furthermore, poorer students possibly feel shy and isolated from their peer friends, regarding their inadequacy of learning materials, no style of dressing, inability to access to latest technologies,…
However, poverty does not mean children have to grow up in darkness throughout their lives. When children are born in an unfortunate circumstances, it potentially comes as a chance for them children to improve their status by their own efforts rather than having to depend on their parents for essential need. Financial problems, for examples, can be solved by part-time jobs if they are old enough and capable of balancing their time between studying and working. This can help children to gain some useful experience and become independent from the early age. Another illustration is for every success story, some people such as billionaires actually came from nothing at all, beating the odds and achieving the peak of success. In these cases, poverty is undoubtedly not a deterrent, but a source of inspiration for a child to push themselves forwards, cover up their shortcomings on their own in order to achieve high success in the future.
On balance, admittedly, the negative impact of poor environment on the young generation is inevitable but whether the development of such children are misled mainly rests on the way they themselves view their circumstances as a deterrent or a great motivation to struggle throughout.
