This is more of... than

Hi,

1. I was wondering if there's any difference in register and/or meaning between the following two forms. Is there any motivation that makes a native speaker use one instead of the other?

a. It was more of a request than an order.
b. It was a request rather than an order.

2. Could we use the following structure for non-counts?:

c. It was more advice than suggestion

To me it sounds odd, and I would use a "rather" structure as b. above, but is this structure possible and ever used?

Thanks!

tarirotaria. It was more of a request than an order.
b. It was a request rather than an order.
more of is similar to more like. rather than is similar to (but) not. So the meanings of a and b are not the same.

a'. It was more like a request than like an order.
b'. It was a request, (but) not an ord
