This is lot better.

Suppose you prefer one thing over the others by saying "This one is better."

Which of the following would be grammatically correct?
This is lot better.
This is a lot better.

Colloquially I hear "This is lot better." quite often.
Am I hearing it right?  or wrong?

This is a lot better.-- This is correct.

Colloquially I hear "This is lot better." quite often. Am I hearing it right? or wrong? -- You are hearing it wrong. The article is there, but it is much reduced. Or you may be hearing 'lots better'.
