Hello, this is John King... instead of Hello, my name is John King...

Is this a natural way of introducing oneself?

Not in person, but it is natural for a TV talking head. It's an interesting point. I wonder whether it didn't start in radio, where you couldn't see them. It would be normal over radio or telephone.
