This is 'A' or 1.
This is the 'A' or the 1.

i) When do you say letters or numbers dropped of "the"?
1. Upon seeing any first time.
2. Any time if you want.
3. Or some other answers.

ii) press 'E' or 5 (on a keyboard).
Why don't you use "the" with this one, whhen pick up or make 'E' is impossible?

As I suggested, both "It's 'A' and It's an A" can be used. Both "It's 1 and It's a 1" can be used.
Any letter and any number can be used with the article or without. Just remember for single numbers "a 1, an 8, an 11" the indefinite article changes from a to an for numbers based on their starting sound. The use of 'no article' was based on simplifying the fact that some numbers are qu

wilpeter:The use of 'no article' was based on simplifying the fact that some numbers are quantities, some are identifiers, some are addresses, some are character keys on a keyboard, etc. so the meaning of the number or letter has to dictate what rule you follow. I hope that helps a bit.

For the same reason you said "a 'D', you should say "an 'O'".
I think it has a name but the concept is balance.
2 is more than one, and three is more than 2 - this is unbalanced.
2 is more than 1, and 3 is more than 2 - and this is balanced.
a 2 is a number not a quantity. 2 is a quantity as well a
