This institute, which is affiliated to China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, was found on February 20th, 1968. Through its development of over 40 years, it has developed into China's major R&D base of space technology, thereby becoming the backbone of Chinese space program development. It is mainly engaged in developing space technology, R&D of spacecrafts, foreign exchange and cooperation in space industry and application of space technology. It also plays a role in formulating development plan of space technology and researching technological means for the exploration, development and utilization of outer space. Its business covers researching and developing various spacecrafts and ground equipment to meet the needs of clients and offering corresponding services.

The institute, with which some research institutes and satellite manufacturers are affiliated, owns a listed company as well as multiple exclusively-invested subsidiaries. It has set up many key national laboratories and an academy which is dedicated to nurturing post-graduates and training staff and clients. Seven industrial bases have taken shape, where a whole range of systems for research and production is developed, consisting of general design of spacecrafts, research and production of subsystems, satellite assembly tests, environmental tests, manufacturing of ground equipment, application of satellites and protection services. It employs over 10000 workers, including two academicians, twelve experts with national-level contributions and more than 1700 senior technicians. Its ties with spacecraft enterprises and space research institutes in over 10 countries and regions have been established.
