This instead of That

Hi
In a reply to an official email, I wanted to thank the person for sending that email. So I said thank you for sending "this" email.
Is it really wrong? The person is quite important for me in terms of his position and my job situation. Specially that English is not my native language and I really don't want to be blamed for my english, as it is very common at my workplace.
Thanks

It's not clear from your question whether you thanked him for an earlier email or the current one (the one to which you responded with a thank you). If it was an earlier email, then that should've been used. Otherwise, your choice ( this ) was correct.
