This instead of a

Hi. Is the following sentences correct? And is the use of "big" instead of "a" used to emphasize meaning?

He was this big mess when I saw him the other night.

I really thought he would have been this big mess after what happened, but he's been holding up really well.

Who would have thought that he was going to be this big star.

He is this big popstar who's made several number one hits.
