This fall or in (the) fall

Hi. I think the sets of example sentences mean basically the same. I also think the words in parentheses are optional. Am I correct? Thank you in advance for your help.

1. He will visit his grandmother this fall.
2. He will visit his grandmother in (the) fall.

3. Let's go on a group picnic this fall.
4. Let's go on a group picnic in (the) fall.

5. He had a nice time at the picnic this fall.
6. He had a nice time at the picnic in (the) fall.
