This avoided (the?) research becoming arbitrary.

Hello

According to dictionaries, "research" is uncountable. As such, the following sentence seems wrong to me.

This avoided the research becoming arbitrary.

Although the research spoken of refers to a specific research project, shouldn't we delete the definite article "the"?

Your opinion is much appreciated.

In your sentence, if you delete the article "the", the sentence would read as, "This avoided reserach becoming arbitrary." This would mean that any research has become arbitrary. Surely, this isn't the message you want to convey?

Thanks for throwing your light on this. I gather that "the" has to be kept.
