This And That As Adverbs

So as far as I know adverbs "this"and"that" are used when describing the size, amount, etc. of something. Then i've got a question if there's any difference between them?Is it right to only use "that" when it comes to a big degree of something,or it doesn't really matter and these adverbs are interchangeable in all cases?
