First world: the "developed" "Western" countries (which also includes Australia... "developed" probably means "gets new technology within a decade" or similar).

Second world: the Communists - Soviet Bloc and possibly China too, but it was very rarely used (1)

The USSR was often characterized as "a Third World country with a First World military" but my husband, who was there in 1965, says it wasn't that nice.
