Third party

If a retail company asks an IT specialist company to manage its IT systems, is it correct to say it has asked a "third party" to manage its IT function? The process is known as "outsourcing" isn't it?

Thanks

Yes, you have both of those right. It is called outsourcing

And 'third party' is correct too. The first party is the retail company; the second is the company's customers; the third is the IT company that have been brought in

I don't see it that way, Dave.

A third part is a party besides the two parties primarily involved. The customers are not an involved party. in this instance.. The IT function is a part of the company but not a separate party.. In short. the only two parties involved are the retail company and the IT specialist

Hmm. My computer at work is supplied by a third party and sometimes they and my employers behave as if they are the only two parties. My frustration at the computer not working appears to be utterly extraneous to their contractual agreement. So maybe you're right!
