Third or Mixed Conditional Clause?

Hi all,
I have a fill in the blanks question on third and mixed type of conditionals. I think the answer should be in mixed type conditional but I'm not sure. Can we also use third conditional here?

Here's the question:

Jim is just a careless boy. If Jim..weren't… (be) so clumsy, he ...wouldn't have broken…. (break) my favourite knick-knack.

Thanks,

Top answer

If Jim weren't/wasn't so clumsy, he wouldn't have broken my favourite knick-knack. Jim is a clumsy person generally. If Jim hadn't been so clumsy, he wouldn't have broken my favourite knick-knack.

  • If Jim weren't/wasn't so clumsy, he wouldn't have broken my favourite knick-knack.
  • Jim is a clumsy person generally.
  • If Jim hadn't been so clumsy, he wouldn't have broken my favourite knick-knack.
  • Jim was clumsy on that particular occasion.
