Third condtional

Hello all.

I am looking through a grammar workbook and one task is to complete this sentence:

- You wouldn't have been tired all day if you ________ (go) to bed earlier.

I chose the answer as 'had been', but the answer at the back of the book says the answer is 'had gone'.

Why would it be ' had gone' and not 'had been'?

Many thanks.
