'thinly' has perhaps a wider application than 'sparsely'. Where 'thinly' is concerned, natives probably think of 'thinly sliced' and 'thinly disguised' more readily than they think of 'thinly populated', but with 'sparsely' they think of 'sparsely populated' immediately.
