Is the following sentence OK?

Have you ever wondered what a dog or bird is thinking?

If yes, what is the difference in meaning between the above sentence and "Have you ever wondered what a dog or bird is thinking of?"

Have you ever wondered what a dog is thinking (of/about)? means "Do you recall a time when you were wondering what a specific dog you were looking at was thinking?" A preposition is optional here and doesn't really alter the meaning.
