Thinking it's over

Hey. Does "thinking it's over" seem natural here to you? Not to mean "I'm going to die now" obviously, but to mean that "it's over. I survived."?

After a long exchange of fire, Tom manages to kill the last terrorist. Thinking it's over, Tom starts to leave. But then suddenly someone fires at him from behind. He looks back and sees yet another terrorist.
