Thinking about something that doesn't exist or no one is normally thinking about this

what is the verb, adverb or term to express that you are thinking of something that doesn't exist, or no one is thinking about it, but it is NOT positive, e.g. you are thinking that someone is going to harm you or kill you or someone is following you a long way but there isn't .

so, "imagine" doesn't sound like what I need.
