If I imagine a conversation or a monologue in my head, I am thinking to myself.....instead of expressing myself aloud to someone else.

Does the phrase "thinking to oneself" correspond to anything in reality, I wonder? Something that can be distinguished from merely "thinking"?

Or is the phrase simply a literary convention?

On the other hand I am quite well known for 'thinking out loud' where I'm lost in my thoughts but all the random stuff generated is being spoken as well to the amusement or confusion of onlookers, so I suppose you can think to yourself.
