I hear this on TV person was german, is this make sense?

On spoken, people tend to use "with" is that ok on formal?
  1. The worst is over with.
On spoken, people say in case like the below, on formal, how does someone?
  1. The employer doesn't mingle with employees in case he has to let one go.
