things don't turn out as you'd expected

In the beginning, it's easy to do more or say more than what is appropriate for a new relationship. This can lead to your getting hurt, especially if things don't turn out as you'd expected.

Hi,

Does the part in bold mean "the results of things is not what you'd expected" or "things don't proceed in the way as you'd expected?" Thanks.

Either, really, but here it seems to be a euphemism for "when you break up."
