If I was to say someone was in "their 50s" (example:the only Jews I know who keep Kosher are in their 50s). would the sentence be wrong? I've seen it used in this from many times.

I'd say it's better to think in term of levels of formality.
Lower level of formality :the only Jews I know who keep Kosher are in their 50s Higher level: the only Jews I know who keep Kosher are in their fifties
